Meningioma following cranial irradiation.
The case of a middle aged man who developed a meningioma directly underneath the site of a naevus treated with radiotherapy as a child, is presented. Epidemiological evidence and reports of similar cases suggesting meningiomas may be a sequel to irradiation, are reviewed.
متن کاملElimination of microglia improves cognitive function following cranial irradiation
Cranial irradiation for the treatment of brain cancer elicits progressive and severe cognitive dysfunction that is associated with significant neuropathology. Radiation injury in the CNS has been linked to persistent microglial activation, and we find upregulation of pro-inflammatory genes even 6 weeks after irradiation. We hypothesize that depletion of microglia in the irradiated brain would h...

Outlook following "somnolence syndrome" after prophylactic cranial irradiation The "somnolence syndrome" consists of drowsiness, lethargy, anorexia, and irritability occuring in about 600% of children six weeks after prophylactic irradiation of the central nervous system in acute leukaemia or non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.1 It is associated with electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities.1 We have st...
متن کاملModels support prophylactic cranial irradiation.
In this issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Lee et al present a rather unique and useful statistical interpretation of the waxing question of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) for patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). The concept of PCI for SCLC has its origins in the comparison of the behavior of this disease with childhood leukemia, a disease that is essentially systemic in...
متن کاملCranial Irradiation Alters the Behaviorally Induced
Therapeutic irradiation of the brain is commonly used to treat brain tumors but can induce cognitive impairments that can severely affect quality of life. The underlying mechanisms responsible for radiation-induced cognitive deficits are unknown but likely involve alterations in neuronal activity. To gain some mechanistic insight into how irradiation may affect hippocampal neurons known to be a...
